MAKING BOAT - PART 1: THE STORY

This is part one of the behind the scenes on my short film ‘boat’, we will be posting more videos in the coming weeks.

This part covers the story of the film and features concept art from Anthony Devine and footage from the 4 day shoot in Edinburgh.

This is the latest short film i am working on, it is called Boat and we are in pre production. I am working with Katie Crook (Blue Iris Films) who is producing the film. It is going to be a great project and the team we are bringing together are all excellent in their chosen fields, our CGI Artist has had over 15 years experience working on games and films such as Judge Dredd and the Avengers, he is currently a lead artist at Rockstar Games. Synopsis:

BOAT - The world is covered with water, Charlie is restricted to his boat searching for a home he may never find. Plagued by memories, nightmares and hallucinations will Charlie ever find what he’s after?

The film is a 9 minute short CGI-meets-live-action film about a very personal apocalypse. In the vein of a low budget ‘The Road’, ‘Inception’, ‘Pincher Martin’ and with hints of Magritte this is an eclectic and ambitious project shooting in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The film is now up on the IndieGoGo website. This is a crowdfunding website where art projects ask for small cash donations from friends, family and random internet surfers to fund their projects.

POST PRODUCTION- COURT (SHORT) UPDATE!

So we finished up on Court and it was a great shoot, we stuck by the one day shoot and it all went fairly smoothly, we had to adapt the script slightly due to the fact we were hammered with rain for the first part of the day and then the sun came out…only in scotland.

Really happy with how it all turned out it! There will also be a great 3 minute behind the scenes clip that was directed by Richard Morgan and shot by Steve cook which is really cool, they did an awesome job making us look like we knew what we were doing!!

The film is edited and graded, we are just at the sound mix before we fire it off to festivals…great laugh and many thanks to the cast and crew for being fantastic! Great Banter.

On to the next one…

THEY’RE HERE: ONEKIND FILM

Humans have a persistent need to believe there is other intelligent life out there in the universe, when actually there is other intelligent life out there, and much closer than we think.

This is the Onekind video i directed for Onekind.

It started off as a viral campaign, teasing audiences of an alien invasion. It stirred up quite a buzz, getting many viral movie sites talking about the project.

This is the final film that we are all very proud of. The viral clips were a mixture of aerial footage and old super 8 films i had, it was a great project to work on and the whole team at onekind were excellent and a pleasure to work with…and it was pretty cool directing an advert with a Star Wars actor!

BBC FLASH MOB: EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL

I Directed and Edited this BBC Flash Mob video that was to promote BBC Radio 4 comedians, storming the Festival.

The Comedians (Steven K Amos, Mark Watson, Janey Godley and more) were hiding in an alleyway then they stormed the Royal Mile and performed Stand up to the crowd. This was the first part of a 30 minute BBC Red Button show that was aired on TV for a week over the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The red Button show received 540,000 viewers!!!!

We had a great crew for the production. Lots of Fun!!!!

PLAYSPORT ADVERT (STV)

Playsport is a new sports centre that has opened in East Kilbride, i was hired to Direct a advert for STV to promote the opening of the centre.

We shot on the canon 7d camera and shot over two days at the centre, the advert aired on STV for a week in the lead up to the opening.

IN PRODUCTION- COURT (SHORT)

COURT, is a short i have wanted to make for a while now, i have missed the chance to work on the 48 hour film challenge the last few years so i thought why wait and just do it.

So i wanted to make a short film that i could shoot in a day (a very long day) and it would give me the chance to shoot a short on the RED CAM. I am working on a series of projects with Filmmaker Krish Shrikumar who is also shooting COURT, I am also working with Richard Morgan who edited the behind the scenes on A Spanking in Paradise, we are hoping to document the shoot through short behind the scenes clips. Matt Brown who i have worked with on many projects will be camera assisting on the shoot too.

COURT is written by Josh Makaruk and the script is a short comedy about two men with contrasting outlooks on life as they play a game of one on one basketball on their lunch break.

Myself and Krish took the RED CAM and we shot test footage at an outdoor court in Edinburgh to test light/ set ups on the RED. We got some excellent results and i cant wait to get shooting on it.

COURT will be shot in late July and will be out there very soon!

This is the follow up to my short which won the Halloween Horror Challenge and is showcased on the Best of Scottish Shorts DVD 2008.

I have taken the short story and developed it further by toning down the experimental nature of “five steps” and make The Happiest Man in Town more narrative driven.

Edinburgh from up on high!

I really wanted to make the city of Edinburgh a character in this and managed to do some pretty interesting aerial shots. I wanted to show Edinburgh from above and from angles never seen before, which is getting increasingly difficult as everyone is making great films depicting the city in very different ways but i haven’t seen Edinburgh from that viewpoint yet….i dont think!!!

The film is in production (hoping to be completed by August) but i have shot some footage and created a trailer (link below) to get interest and crew members involved. I am gathering the crew at the minute but like “Five steps” It has a budget of about 30p and a packet of crisps. So i have had to blag the aerial shots and beg crew members to be involved. If your are wanting to get involved drop me an email.

There will be a website with more information on the film/crew/cast etc and the very cool designers over at CIVIC have been kind enough to design the site for me! They are all awesome and been reallygreat to work with.

I got to work on this before i edited the film. Great cast and crew! Edited by Richard Morgan, Camera by Hadley Parsons and Music by Rossco Galloway!
