Plum

Plum

1- So tell me why you are called plum?
I don’t really know - it’s a nickname my dad gave me when I was really young - probably still a baby, my family have called me Plum all my life.  In college (studying Music Production) we were encouraged to set up a myspace, and I didn’t want to use my real name, so my lecturer said “Just pick a nickname, you can change it later” so I used Plum…and then started getting really good feedback and people seemed to like the name too so I stuck with it…

2- We just finished your music video toys, can you tell us about the concept of the song and how it came about?

Er… yes. I’m not sure of the legalities with this story so I will begin by saying it is entirely a figment of my imagination… I was on a train from Edinburgh to London. At Newcastle this little girl knocked my head (I was sleeping) and I jumped. She giggled for at least 3 minutes right in my face. Then about 30 minutes later she returned to my seat and jumped up on the chair next to me. Her legs were sticking over the edge of the seat and she just jabbered nonsense at me the whole way to London. After about an hour of hillarious stories from her, I decided to turn on my recording device. Then she started telling me about this shed her mum had promised her where she was going to keep all of her toys. She was really funny. I went back to college and put the samples into Cubase, and let the swing of the sample make the tempo and structure of the song. Her voice was so excited, I had to go with happy sounding riffs and instruments. I actually had tears of laughter down my face as I was making the song!

3- If someone hadn’t heard your music before how would you describe?
This is a good question. I can never answer this one… I suppose I would say it’s raw accoustic electronica …raw in terms of emotions as my music is really personal…someone said last week at a gig that I sounded naked.

4- What’s your favorite song of your own work?

Fairies - it saved me. I was in a really dark place, and I wrote that song in the middle of the night. I had a memory of being 5 years old in my fairy garden (which was really just a rock garden that I made in a little section of the garden where I used to play). I really believed fairies used to live in there, and used to spend hours there, making wishes, and sitting quietly listening to see if I could hear them. It was nice, and I really wanted to go back there, to a place where I could believe in something good. I wrote the song, and it helped me to see more of the nicer things in the world - sounds really corny. But it’s true.

5- What is next for you?

Who knows - I’m working on an album at the moment, and getting a lot of gigs - I’m keen to work with more live instruments for live performances - a live drummer and possibly double bass so it would be good to sort that out. Also some collaborations - DJ Ben Phaze is bringing out an album called Tunnels which has loads of samples from the London Underground, it sounds really dark and other worldly, and is beautifully produced. I am really proud to be involved in that work! I’m sorting out my studio as well - my laptop got cracked at a gig in Edinburgh a few weeks ago which resulted in me being forced to upgrade and get a new system. I’m thinking of going over to Mac eventually.

Oh and more music videos! ;)

6- Tell us about your new album?

What’s to tell? I have a couple of collaborative songs on there with some great musicians which is exciting, lots of personal stuff, some new pieces that haven’t been recorded yet. Some nice samples in there. Crickets and the likes.

7- What advice would you give other artists starting out?

If it doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t do it. I think music will always sound amazing and reach people if it has real feeling in it - whatever the style or talent. Also, accept that creative people will always go through periods which are inspired and really productive, and times when they can’t make anything they like. Don’t let it put you off as it will always come back.

There you go!! First interview for the site…Plum will be doing the first ‘one song gigs’ I’m doing on the site…It will be a mini musical showcase for artists!! It will be starting up soon, if any musicians want to be part of the ‘one song gigs’ drop me an email.
